EVERTON 2 TOTTENHAM 6

Harry Kane equalled a Premier League record with a double against Everton for the fourth successive match as Tottenham raced to a convincing 6-2 win at Goodison Park yesterday.

Spurs put all the speculation linking manager Mauricio Pochettino with Manchester United behind them to stay within touching distance – six points – of Liverpool at the top of the table.

Kane, becoming only the second player after Michael Owen against Newcastle to score twice in four successive meetings against the same team, and Son Heung-min accounted for four goals, with Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen also netted.

Everton, who led through Theo Walcott’s first league goal in four months and could have been 2-0 up but for Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s disallowed header, fell apart shortly after Gylfi Sigurdsson had briefly made it 4-2 earlier in the second half.

They have not won since their addedtime defeat in the Merseyside derby at the start of the month and have taken six points from a possible 21.

Andros Townsend’s stunning goal helped Crystal Palace to a shock 3-2 victory at champions Manchester City.

Ilkay Gundogan put the hosts ahead in the 27th minute before Palace hit back through Jeffrey Schlupp’s low shot.

Townsend’s swerving left-footed volley from 30 yards, a contender for goal of the season, put struggling Palace in front in the 35th minute and the Eagles dared to dream when Luka Milivojevic rifled home a penalty in the 51st minute.

Kevin De Bruyne pulled City back into the game after 85 minutes as his cross drifted in off the post, but their first home defeat of the season leaves them four points behind leaders Liverpool.

Chelsea also lost ground in the title race as they slumped to a 1-0 defeat against Leicester at Stamford Bridge.

Jamie Vardy’s close-range effort in the 51st minute settled the contest to keep the Blues in fourth place.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s reign as Manchester United caretaker manager began with a convincing 5-1 win at former club Cardiff City.

The 45-year-old took over earlier this week after Jose Mourinho was sacked and Marcus Rashford wasted little time in easing any nerves with a third-minute free-kick and Ander Herrera’s shot deflected in after 29 minutes.

Victor Camarasa pulled one back with a penalty for Cardiff in the 38th minute but the Red Devils turned on the style to restore their two-goal advantage four minutes before the break as Anthony Martial rounded off a brilliant team move.

Jesse Lingard added to their lead in the 57th minute from the spot after being fouled and the England international completed the rout in the closing stages with his second goal.

The Cardiff City Stadium result is the first time United have scored five goals in the Premier League since Sir Alex Ferguson was in charge, and it keeps Solskjaer’s side in sixth place.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored twice as Arsenal moved level on points with Chelsea with a 3-1 win over Burnley.

Ashley Barnes’ low finish in the 63rd minute brought Burnley back into the contest but Alex Iwobi’s close-range finish made sure the Clarets remained in the relegation zone.

Southampton’s resurgence under new boss Ralph Hasenhuttl continued as they beat struggling Huddersfield 3-1.

The Saints moved three points clear of the drop zone after holding off the Terriers at the John Smith’s Stadium with goals from Nathan Redmond, Danny Ings and Michael Obafemi.

Bottom side Fulham moved level on points with 19th-placed Huddersfield after picking up their first clean sheet of the season in a 0-0 draw at Newcastle.

David Brooks’ double helped Bournemouth to a 2-0 victory over Brighton, while Troy Deeney’s first-half penalty and a late Gerard Deulofeu goal earned Watford a 2-0 win at West Ham.
