UK paying the price for dictating to the EU

-

Sir, – The word bullying used to be descriptive of the strong taking advantage of the weak but currently Kenneth Brannan (Courier Letters, December 24) seeks to cast the EU as the bully in its dealings with the UK which not so long ago had bullied a substantial part of the world to create the British Empire.

He conveniently overlooks the fact that, but for British unwarranted intervention, Ireland would not be a divided nation and the UK would not be faced with trying to find a solution to the Irish border problem which is entirely of its own making.

The trouble started when the UK tail started to wag the EU dog because of the internal demands of conflicting interests within the Tory party.

Mr Brannan’s message to those in the Republic of Ireland is that they should, in common with all other EU citizens, be denied free movement of goods and access to the UK which overrules the view of the citizens of Northern Ireland who want to retain the current seamless border arrangement.

He also talks about factions trying to overturn the democratically obtained Brexit result which like any nationwide UK vote will always reflect the will of the large population south of the border.

Even Northern Ireland, aka the British bit, voted to remain as did Scotland but the democratic wishes of both smaller nations are being negated by their big bully of a neighbour.
