The state of unemployment in the textile trades at Arbroath and Dundee has been made the subject of a report and discussion by the Scottish Divisional Council for Demobilisation and Resettlement. The report showed that the reasons for the large amount of unemployment were: cancellation of Government orders; present high prices of raw materials; high cost of production; buyers, unless those urgently requiring finished material. Manufacturers are afraid to carry stocks of finished material.

Burmah Oil, the only major Scottish oil company, are selling their own petrol in Scotland. Eleven garages and filling stations in the central belt of Scotland, including the Euroscot autopoint in Cairneyhill, Dunfermline, opened yesterday under the Burmah banner. By the end of this year, it is intended to have at least 69 petrol stations, including a big one being built in the site of the old hackle factory in Dens Road, Dundee. Burmah already have 250 petrol stations in England.

Three Dundee schoolboys have been suspended after being implicated in drug abuse. The three fifth-year pupils have been barred from classes at St John’s High for the foreseeable future in connection with the use of cannabis. The news comes just days after a 15-year-old Angus boy was sentenced to two years’ probation for dealing in LSD and another six were expelled for possession of cannabis. While prosecutions may follow, it is understood that the police were not involved in the St John’s case.

Schools across Perth and Kinross and Fife will remain closed today amid an unprecedented red weather warning. Hundreds of train services have been cancelled as people are told to avoid all travel. Yesterday thousands of commuters who had made it into work were urged to head for home early as conditions dramatically deteriorated, Perth College announced the closure of all of its sites just after 6am. Glenshee Ski Centre was also closed, with staff announcing on social media that the resort was “stormbound”.
