Nearby resident says she heard ‘sirens and then a big bang’

A police officer was badly injured when his patrol car was involved in a threevehicle crash as he responded to an emergency call.

The unnamed officer was on a blue light call when he was involved in a collision on Oriel Road, Kirkcaldy, at 4.50pm yesterday.

The patrol car and a red car are said to have collided and a white Audi TT was also involved.

It is believed that the injured police officer passed out for a short while. A second police officer in the patrol car escaped injury.

It is unclear where the officers were heading or if they were in pursuit of one of the other vehicles involved in the accident.

One nearby resident said she was sitting in her house when she heard “sirens and then a big bang”.

Three fire and rescue appliances, all from Kirkcaldy, were sent to the scene.

They were called to the incident at 5pm.

One passer-by said firefighters had to cut people out of all three vehicles, including the police car.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: “The service was alerted at 4.58pm on Friday March 8 to reports of a road traffic collision in Kirkcaldy.

“Operations control mobilised three fire engines to the incident at Oriel Road involving three cars.

“Firefighters safely removed one casualty from one of the vehicles and passed them into the care of the Scottish Ambulance Service.

“Crews are currently working to remove two other casualties from the other cars.

“Firefighters will remain on scene until the area is made safe.”

Three further police patrol cars were quickly at the scene.

Shortly after three ambulances and two further paramedic cars were sent to the scene.

The police officer and a woman from one of the other vehicles were taken to hospital for treatment.

It is unknown whether anyone else required hospital treatment.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: “We were called at 4.50pm following a collision involving three vehicles.

“The road is currently closed in both directions and we would advise motorists to avoid the area.”
