Movement at last in Brexit wrangle?

-

After interminable wrangling, threats and delays, the latest “Brexit D-day” looms large for the country.

It is actually a series of such attention-grabbing set pieces, with a vote tomorrow on Theresa May’s deal which, should it be defeated, will be followed by another on a no-deal outcome and then a third on an Article 50 extension.

In reality, with fewer than three weeks until the country leaves the European Union, we seem no more certain about the outcome than two years ago.

In Mrs May’s words, leave still means leave and nothing has changed.

However, those insistent on separation on March 29 are getting increasingly concerned.

It is hard to see any other outcome than rejection of the Prime Minister’s deal.

Leaving without an agreement is too risky to contemplate and so, a plea to the EU to extend the deadline is the most likely next step at the end of the week.

Pragmatism would suggest that will be granted and the merry-go-round will embark on another fruitless spin.

There is a growing clamour to “just get it done” but the truth is, this is far from the end.

Leaving was supposed to be the simple part, with complex trade negotiations around the world coming in its wake.

Anyone who thinks this week will define Brexit and the country’s future, may have a rude awakening in store.
