Fed leapfrog Bluebells

JUNIORS: Smith and Appere goals help Broughty go second in Super League

- PETER RUNDO

Broughty Athletic were big benefactors in their last game on grass at Whitton Park on Saturday after Whitburn’s surprise defeat at Glenrothes and Lochee United’s match at Fauldhouse being postponed.

The Fed’s 3-1 win over Thornton Hibs took them above Bluebells into second place and within two points of the leaders.

But it wasn’t all plain sailing as they had to come from behind after Chris Ireland had given the Fifers an interval advantage. A Brad Smith double gave the hosts the lead. Then Louis Appere kept up his goal-a -game average with a third to seal victory.

Comeback of the day belonged to bottom side Glenrothes.

Trailing by two goals after 26 minutes at home to leaders Whitburn, they hit back to win 3-2. Whitburn raced into a two-goal lead by the midpoint of the first half thanks to a Gary Brass penalty and an Andy Mcquillan header.

However, the game turned when Gavin Moffat headed home on the stroke of half-time.

John Martin fired a great shot into the bottom corner for the leveller and with seven minutes left Scott Napier was on the end of a deflected shot from Moffat to slide home a deserved winner.

The spoils were shared between Forfar West End and Tayport at Strathmore Park with all the goals coming in the first half.

Craig Batchelor opened the scoring for the hosts after 14 minutes, but their joy was short-lived as Jamie Mackie volleyed home the equaliser. On 27 minutes the Fifers edged ahead when Kris Rollo sent a shot on the turn into the top corner.

West End replied on 38 minutes when Batchelor notched his second and he passed up a glorious chance to complete his hat-trick early in the second half.

Although West End’s Robbie George was red-carded with half an hour left, Port failed to take advantage.

Carnoustie Panmure made it backto-back victories with a 2-0 success over Kennoway Star Hearts at Laing Park. Jamie Mccabe scored in the first minute and Ryan Roche grabbed the second on 21 minutes.

Premier League North

It was hard to tell almost the entire length of the league separated hosts Forfar Albion and leaders North End, who were made to work hard for their 2-1 victory.

Gary Archibald put the Dokens in front but Ross Jamieson cancelled that out before Kevin Milne notched the winner.

Not for the first time this season, East Craigie and Luncarty couldn’t be separated as they shared four goals.

Rory Faulkner and Conan Howett from a penalty were on target for the Shipbuilders with Fraser Mills and Tony Holt netting for the Perthshire side.

Scone Thistle had to come from behind at home before edging out Arbroath Vics 3-2. Zac Archer fired the visitors ahead on 57 minutes, but that was cancelled out by Kevin Sinclair seven minutes later.

Goals from Arron Mckay and Andy Mckenzie gave the hosts a two-goal cushion, but Mike Fotheringham pulled one back with 13 minutes left.

Coupar Angus returned to action and went down 7-0 away to Violet. Only a Cammy Black goal separated the sides at the break, but doubles from Kamil Kadela and Andy Patullo, plus an own goal and a Richard Carlyle counter, racked up the total in the second half.

Thorntons Property League Cup

Super League Downfield beat Premier League tenants Lochee Harp 2-0 thanks to goals from Dale Davidson and Lee Cameron.

Kirrie Thistle defeated visitors Brechin Vics 2-0 in Group D, their goals coming from Davie Millar and Dale Reid.
