A Dundee pub manager has told how “instinct kicked in” as she tried to fight off three men raiding her premises.

The woman, who has asked not to be named for fear of reprisals, had just finished tidying The Strath Bar around 2.30 on Saturday morning when it was broken into by a gang of three men.

The gang had battered on the windows of the bar and the lounge before forcing the locked door to the pub.

She said: “There was a loud bang and they came in through the door and shouted ‘whaur’s the money’ or something like that.

“My colleague had her phone and tried to get out the door to call the police and he sort of trapped her against the door.

“I think I grabbed him and he sort of pushed me into a chair in the bar but she got out and started to phone the police.

“The police said I should just have let them take the money but your instinct kicks in.”

The woman then followed her colleague into the street to wait for the

police. She said: “We shouted we were calling the police but they stayed in the pub for some time. You’d think they’d just run. I don’t what they were doing.

“Then they came out and I saw one of them carrying the till.”

She added: “They were all wearing their tops zipped up to cover their faces.”

The thieves made off with a threefigure sum of money – including the pub’s till and two charity collection tins – and a handbag belonging to the manager.

The suspects ran off toward Wedderburn Street following the incident.

Detective sergeant Lucy Cameron of Dundee CID said: “Thankfully the two women, aged 33 and 61, were not injured but this was quite a frightening experience for them both.

“The men ran off with the pub’s till, two collections cans and a handbag so they would have been pretty obvious if seen by someone on the street at that time.

“Officers are checking CCTV and have been back in the pub and the street speaking to people in the area but we would also appeal to anyone who may have seen the men either hanging about the bar beforehand or maybe running off afterwards.
