Cross-bred shearling fetches top price at sale of pedigree rams

THAINSTONE: Texel cross Beltex knocked down for 2,100gn at ANM annual show

A cross-bred shearling from David Moir, Home Farm, Cairness, sold for the top price of 2,100gn at Aberdeen and Northern Marts’ (ANM) annual show and sale of pedigree rams at Thainstone yesterday.

Sale leader from Mr Moir’s pen of 10, which averaged £1,043.65, was a homebred Texel cross Beltex by a Culsh Beltex tup, purchased at Carlisle in 2017.

Bred out of a home-bred pure Texel ewe, he sold to Guise Farm Partnership, Alford.

The same buyer then paid 1,500gn for Mr Moir’s Charollais cross Beltex shearling by the same sire.

Earlier in the day, Border Leicesters hit a top of 1,500gn for the champion from Orcadian breeder Keith Hourston, Skelbister, Orphir.

He is by Muirmouth Showtime, out of a home-bred ewe by Ditton Grand Prix, and sold to A Miller and Sons, Aimster, Thurso.

The reserve champion Border Leicester from Jimmy Douglas, who runs his 20-ewe flock at Woodhead, Cairness, Fraserburgh, made 1,350gn

when sold to Duncan Whyte, Whitelee Gate, Newton Mearns.

Texels sold to 1,200gn for the best from Kenny Pratt’s Hilltop flock at Oldtown, Peterculter.

Selling to Wendy Willox for her Strathinver flock at Broadmyre, Clatt, was a tup lamb by the 17,000gn Garngour Bullet.

Next best in the Texels at 980gn was Michael Leggat’s shearling Foreman Hill Big Man, by Aman Vyrnwy from Cairnton, Huntly, which sold to J and E Campbell, Rosebrough Farm, Chathill, Alnwick.

In the Suffolks, a top price of 1,000gn was paid for the champion from George and Melvin Stuart, Milltown of Birness, Ellon.

This was a tup lamb by the 9,500gn Limestone Legacy, which also heads south with J and E Campbell.

Stuart Wood’s Woodies flock from Woolhillock, Skene, Westhill, led the Beltex section at 1,100gn for his champion ram lamb when sold to Grant Dinnie, Bridgeton, Muir of Fowlis.

Charollais rams sold to 750gn for a shearling from Howard and Andrew Davies, Hillhead of Cannahars, Whitecairns. He sold to Harry Emslie, Kinknockie, Mintlaw.

Matthew Seed, Home Farm of Auchry, Cuminestown, Turriff, ruled supreme in the Bluefaced Leicester section with tup lambs by Burndale K1.

The champion sold for 620gn to Ian Lumsden, Blackriggs, Strichen, while the reserve made 500gn when purchased by CL Sclater, Waltness, Shapinsay.
