Irish win seniors title at Menteith

- Angling WITH NEIL ANDERSON

LAKE OF MENTEITH hosted the Senior 2019 Autumn International.

The four teams spent four days practising on the water with large numbers of fish being caught on a variety of methods, including dries.

As is often the case, the weather changed for match day with early mist soon clearing to clear skies with warm sunshine.

Team Ireland landed a total of 109 fish for a total weight of 251lbs 2.8ozs – their first win away from Ireland for 22 years. Second were Wales who landed 104 for 242lbs 14.1ozs. Third place went to Scotland who had 94 for 229lbs 1.1ozs, while the dreaded wooden spoon went to Team England with 92 for a total of 221lbs 9.5ozs.

Derek Hessett was top Scottish rod with 14 fish for a total of 31lbs 11.5ozs, while heaviest fish was a rainbow of 4lbs 9.4ozs and was landed by Neill Barrett of Scotland.

The lake was stocked again on Monday with 800 fish.

At FORBES OF KINGENNIE, with the weather being more settled and temperatures starting to fall, the fishery is looking forward to some excellent days on the water.

On Sunday Kingennie host Rosyth Civil Service Club and the Boathouse and Burnside Pools will be closed on the day for the clubs’ use until around 4pm.

With very clear water conditions the best catches on the Boathouse Pool have been on relatively small patterns (buzzers, dries and diawl bachs).

The Burnside Pool has seen plenty of surface activity and some good catches on dry fly patterns and buzzers. The Woodside pool has fished steady with the usual powerbait being the fish’s downfall.

MONIKIE has had a great spell of sport on dry fly and washing line techniques in particular.

Noted returns include Balgay FFC with three boats (six rods) keeping five fish for 7lbs 9ozs and returning 11, Aberdour A/C with eight boats (15 rods) keeping 60 for 116lbs 10ozs and returning 20 and Dundee West End A/C with six boats (12 rods) keeping 45 for 88lbs 7ozs.

The Gentlemen of KAHTS Whiskers AC, Kirkcaldy, spent their annual outing in Forfar and visited RESCOBIE LOCH at the weekend.

The nine rods caught 12 fish on Saturday for 35lb and 24 hours later they brought in three for 8lb 5oz and returned 14.

Arbroath AC were also out on Sunday with eight rods and brought in 16 (the club only take the first two) and returned 21. Condor end is now fishable.
