Spurs turfed out of cup on penalties as U’s claim major scalp

-

Tottenham were embarrassingly dumped out of the Carabao Cup at Colchester last night after the Sky Bet League Two side won 4-3 on penalties.

After 90 goalless minutes, the U’s took another Premier League scalp as Tom Lapslie hit the winning spot-kick after Christian Eriksen and Lucas Moura missed in the shootout.

It was a hugely worrying night for Spurs, which will do little to appease the notion that there are serious issues for Mauricio Pochettino’s side this season.

Although Pochettino made 10 changes to his side, there was still enough quality on the pitch to be able to beat a side 71 places below them in the football pyramid, but they laboured badly.

They could not find the breakthrough and Colchester, who did not manage a shot on target in the 90 minutes, followed up their second-round win against Crystal Palace with an even bigger scalp on what is one of the most famous nights in their history.

Manchester City began their quest for a third successive Carabao Cup triumph with a clinical 3-0 demolition of Championship high-flyers Preston.

Raheem Sterling set up a comfortable night with a fine solo effort before Gabriel Jesus doubled the lead with a crisp strike.

A Ryan Ledson own goal put the holders three up and effectively ended the contest before the interval.

It was a result that was never in doubt, completely vindicating what had seemed a bold call by City boss Pep Guardiola to hand starts to both Eric Garcia, 18, and Taylor Harwood-bellis, 17, at centre-back.

Danny Ings wrote his name into Southampton folklore by netting twice against Portsmouth and inspiring his boyhood club to a thumping first victory at Fratton Park in 35 years.

Anticipation has been rising since the Carabao Cup third-round draw threw up the first southcoast derby since 2012, with Saints making the short journey along the M27 as favourites against the League One strugglers.

Ings helped his hometown team do the business, with his double complemented by second-half strikes from Cedric Soares and Nathan Redmond as Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side sealed a 4-0 victory against their south coast rivals.

James Justin marked his Luton return with a debut goal for Leicester to help his new club progress into the fourth round with a 4-0 win at Kenilworth Road.

The defender, who left the Hatters in the summer after helping them win back-to-back promotions, fired home in the 44th minute.

Demarai Gray also netted his first of the season before Youri Tielemans and Kelechi Iheanacho wrapped up the victory with two goals in the final 11 minutes.

Arsenal beat Nottingham Forest 5-0.
