Spread the cost and cut the stress this festive season

-

Spreading the cost of Christmas can help save a lot of stress and reduce that dread when January’s credit card bill arrives.

As the festive season approaches here are a few ideas for better Christmas budgeting and spreading the cost this year – a little financial planning could result in a happier holiday for everyone.

Shop smart

Make the most of any end-of-summer sales or autumn offers that might help with your shopping but don’t simply buy items because they look like a bargain – think carefully about whether they will make a great gift before you spend.

Set a budget

Have a clear idea of how much you can afford to spend and what you need to buy in terms of gifts, food etc. If you can’t work out how you are going to pay for something then it’s time to rejig your plans.

Make small savings

If you think that things are going to be tight come December think about savings that you could start to make now.

For example, that £5 a day on lunches, coffees and snacks would give an extra £25 a week or £100 a month to spend. Make your lunch at home and take your coffee to work or have a jar there to make a cuppa when you want one.

Make some space

If you dread the arrival of yet more toys and “stuff” on December 25, why not have a look to see if there is anything that you would be able to sell in order to free up some space and raise some funds.

Book early

Take advantage of early bird offers and pay your deposits ahead for Christmas meals, nights out and shows to help spread the cost of the busy party season.

Embrace the secret Santa concept

It can be fun to try to find a present for a tenner and this is a great idea for large groups of friends or anyone with a huge family.

Take the time to find something that will really suit the recipient and they won’t care whether it cost £10 or £40.
