Dundee support worker fined for running down and injuring man

A Dundee support worker who hit a pedestrian and seriously injured him has been found guilty of careless driving.

Victim John Nicolson was thrown on to the bonnet of Folake Ilesanmi’s car when she ploughed into him at the junction of Lochee Road and Dudhope Terrace.

The incident happened on June 8 last year and sparked a large police presence.

Ilesanmi has now been fined £900 and disqualified from driving for 12 months.

The 38-year-old had only been driving for three months when the drama unfolded.

She was originally charged with causing serious injury by dangerous driving but a jury found her guilty of the lesser charge of careless driving.

Ilesanmi performed a right at the junction at the same time as Mr Nicolson crossed the road at Dudhope Terrace.

She broke down when giving evidence at Dundee Sheriff Court, claiming she did look for hazards but didn’t see the pedestrian.

Mr Nicholson suffered leg injuries and was assisted by passers-by before paramedics arrived.

Meanwhile another motorist, Stacey Ritchie, suffered neck and back pain after Ilesanmi crashed into her stationary vehicle.

Her solicitor David Duncan, told the court his client had made a momentary “error of judgment” and that the incident amounted to an unfortunate accident.

Passing sentence, Sheriff Lorna Drummond said: “You have been found guilty by a majority verdict of careless driving.

“You are a first offender so I’m going to take that into account.”
