Wilson sees improvement needed for breakthrough
Brechin boss Mark Wilson admits he is looking to find the spark to kick-start his team’s season – hopefully when they play Elgin City at the Glebe this afternoon.
The Angus side are still propping up the League 2 table after losing 1-0 to Stenhousemuir last week with the game coming at an added cost following the dismissal of on-loan St Johnstone youngster Olly Hamilton.
However, former Celtic and Dundee United full-back Wilson saw enough improvement from his team to hope they can return to winning ways against Elgin.
He said: “I thought we played well last week and got into good areas in the final third. Poor decision on our part probably prevented us from taking the lead in the first half.
“We were under no pressure whatsoever. I thought we were in control of the second half and then missed a big opportunity when Graeme Smith made a great save from Paul Mcmanus.
“Two minutes later, they go up the park and score from a set piece which really shouldn’t happen if we are fully organised. Looking back on it now that was the one set piece where we were a wee bit all over the place which was the disappointing thing from our perspective.
“So it was obviously a hard one to take after feeling so comfortable in the game.
“But I was certainly happy with how the lads played.”
When asked if he had seen signs of progress from the previous week’s defeat to Cove, Wilson added: “I would say so.
“The stuff we did in training in the lead up to the Stenhousemuir game, the boys definitely took it on board and carried it out to a tee.
“We played with a different shape which I think suited the team.
“We could do with having a few boys back as we have been really low on numbers the last couple of weeks and we will be short again on Saturday.
“Emile Ngoy and Luke Watt are both doubtful for the Elgin game while Sean Mcintosh and Jamie Reid are still out with Olly suspended.
“We are just looking for that wee spark to kick-start your season. It will be an interesting game and we are glad to be back on grass as I think that suits us.”
