Safety lessons to stand hundreds of school pupils in good stead
More than 1,000 pupils across Dundee have been learning safety lessons for life at an annual event.
Safe Taysiders, organised by Dundee City Council, saw P7 pupils tested on a variety of emergencies at Police Scotland’s Balunie Drive offices over three weeks.
This week, Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) taught safety inside and outside of the home, helping the children learn about different hazards, how to avoid them and how to respond in an emergency.
Samantha O’connor, SSEN’S regional customer relationship manager, and Mikey Cummings, a craftsman based in the company’s Dundee depot, led the lessons, given to 1,600 pupils from Dundee and the surrounding area.
Samantha said: “We’ve been supporting the Safe Taysiders event for a number of years now and it’s great to see so many youngsters who are keen to learn more about the world of electricity and how to stay safe both inside and outside of their homes.
“Safety is SSEN’S numberone priority and every year the Safe Taysiders event gives us a unique opportunity to interact and engage with a wide range of pupils.
“It reminds them of the dangers associated with electricity and letting them know if it’s not safe, we don’t do it.”
SSEN’S stand at the event included a mock-up electric pole with safety signs to remind youngsters of the dangers of playing near electrical equipment, examples of the cables and equipment in use across the region, as well as personal protective equipment which the pupils tried on.
