A man was airlifted to hospital after an industrial accident at a supermarket in Perth led to police shutting down a main route through the city.

Emergency services, including the air ambulance, closed Main Street in Bridgend following the incident in which an engineer is believed to have been injured while attending to a lift at the Co-op.

The accident happened at around 7.30am on Friday with witnesses saying they believed the casualty was injured towards the rear of the store.

The man was taken by air ambulance to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee.

Multiple sources told The Courier no customers or shop employees were hurt in the incident.

The road was closed by the emergency services during the morning rush hour as firefighters and the ambulance service attended to the stricken man.

One witness said: “I first saw them about 7.30am. The fire engines and the police started shooting through. They came over the bridge and pulled up outside the Co-op and then the air ambulance arrived.
