Jail sentence for Dundee joiner who sold cocaine to pay debts

-

A Dundee joiner who turned to drug dealing to pay off debts has been jailed after being caught with cocaine worth up to £14,000.

Dale Anderson began selling drugs after struggling to find a job, Dundee Sheriff Court heard.

When police raided his home, they found tubs and bags full of white powder, which tested positive for cocaine.

Officers also found scales, a bowl and a quantity of cash.

The street value of the cocaine was estimated to have been between £4,500 and £14,400.

The 27-year-old pled guilty to being concerned in the supply of the class A drug at his Mains Drive home between January and February 2014 and on December 12 2018.

His defence solicitor, Anika Jethwa, said: “Mr Anderson was in a bit of financial difficulty.

“He started off supplying (drugs) to friends.

“He got himself into debt and unfortunately became involved in this matter.

“He is well aware that supplying a class A drug is extremely serious and is dealt with seriously by the courts.”

Ms Jethwa said her client has distanced himself from his old acquaintances and has “learned his lesson”.

“He has a full-time job and is in a stable relationship”, she added.

“He knows he has made a mess of his life by being involved in this matter.”

Sheriff Alastair Carmichael jailed Anderson for nine months, reduced from 12 months due to the early plea and subsequent good behaviour.

“I have thought carefully about this, and I have decided a custodial sentence is required,” he said.
