Sporting action at the Links as cyclocross returns to Montrose
Cyclists from across Scotland will converge on Angus this weekend for a packed programme of racing on Montrose’s East Links.
Building on the success of last year’s inaugural event, Mo Cross has now become an official stage of the Scottish Cyclocross Championship and a field of more than 400 riders is confirmed for the event, with the traditional ringing of cowbells encouraging the racers on.
Tomorrow’s event will feature 10 races in an actionpacked day-long programme.
There are categories for youngsters from the age of eight through to veterans.
The races will cover varying lengths of time and a number of challenging features will force racers to dismount and carry their bike in order to navigate the obstructions.
Last year UCI Cyclocross World Championship competitor Cameron Mason picked up the trophy, with the top-level rider praising Montrose for its “fast and punchy course on the stunning seafront”.
Hosts Montvelo Cycling Club said it was proud to attract top-level athletes but was keen to stress it is an event suited to people of all cycling abilities.
Club chairman Andy Inglis said: “With free entry for all spectators we want to encourage as many people as possible to come down and support Mo Cross, not only to cheer on the competitors, but also to inspire future talent.”
The course opens at 9am with the first race kicking off at 9.30am.
Refreshments will be available and local bike shop Bruce’s Cycle Bothy will also be in attendance to offer advice and support.
