ATHLETICS

EAST CROSS-COUNTRY LEAGUE Scots athlete Andrew Butchart swapped the heat of Doha, where he competed in the World Championships, for the autumnal surroundings of Stirling University and the opening round of the East Cross-country League.

Butchart lost no time in taking the lead with only Central AC colleague Jamie Crowe in chase 20 metres adrift. The pattern remained unchanged to the finish of the senior 8km race with Butchart completing his first cross-country for a couple of years in a time of 28 minutes 08 seconds, with Crowe following home in 28.28.

Alastair Hay completed Central’s clean sweep of the podium places by finishing third in 29.21.

Top points came for Courier Country athletes in the U17 Men’s 6km race won by Livingston’s Andrew Mcgill ahead of Fife AC’S Ben Sandilands. Dundee Hawkhill – led home by Ethan Mccolgan in third – dominated the team standings with Ryan Smith following fourth and Aidan Simpson sixth, totalling a low scoring 13 points.

Perth Strathtay Harriers, led home by Ben Henderson in ninth, were second with 55 points.

2018-19 women’s team champions Fife AC were third senior women’s team – led home by Halina Rees in ninth and Jennifer Cruickshanks in 11th.

Brave runs by over-60 veterans Innes Bracegirdle in 41st and Margaret Martin in 46th completed the Fife scoring to keep the club in contention in the league rankings. Fife AC’S Isla Thoms excelled in the combined U17/U15 girls’ 4km, placing second/first U15 – 17 seconds down on U17 athlete Isla Calvert (Livingston).

CURLING

MUIRHEAD INTO LAST EIGHT Perthshire curler Eve Muirhead scored two big wins to reach the quarter-finals of the Canad Classic in Portage, Manitoba. Saturday’s 9-8 extra-end defeat to Edmonton’s Laura Walker cost her an automatic last eight spot, but Muirhead and team-mates Vicky Wright, Jennifer Dodds and Lauren Gray responded superbly. Korean Eunjung Kim had beaten them in Calgary last week, but the Scots took revenge with a 6-2 win. They then beat local skip Tracy Fleury 7-1 to secure their place in the quarters.

Meanwhile, Perth’s Robin Brydone and Duncan Mcfadzean were part of Ross Whyte’s team which reached the Champery Masters quarterfinals in Switzerland. Their run ended when they lost 7-2 to Oslo’s ex-world champion Thomas Ulsrud.
