Dundee Stars return to winning ways with victory over Clan

ICE HOCKEY: Fife Flyers suffer weekend of woe as Kirkcaldy men end up pointless

Dundee Stars finally ended their losing run on Saturday and claimed a muchneeded win and two points for their league campaign.

Stars were without defenceman Kris Inglis as he recovers from an upper body injury sustained last weekend.

Dundee’s goals came from Colton Kroeker, Jordan Cownie and Elgin Pearce, with Jordan Heywood and Scott Pitt countering for Clan as the Dundee men held on to win 3-2.

Kroeker had the puck in the net again after Clan’s second, but officials ruled out the strike for offside, much to the surprise of everyone in the Ice Arena.

Responding well to a 7-2 thrashing by Belfast Giants 24 hours earlier, the two vital points lifted Dundee off the bottom of the table and they are now preparing for their next clash, away to Nottingham Panthers on Wednesday evening.

Fife Flyers failed to earn a point in 120 minutes of ice hockey at the weekend after being beaten 4-1 at home by Sheffield Steelers last night.

Todd Dutiaume’s men lost 4-3 at Nottingham Panthers on Saturday and

Flyers have now won only one of their last five fixtures in the Elite League.

Last night Robert Dowd fired Sheffield ahead on the powerplay after four minutes.

Fife levelled short-handed from Carol Finucci after 22 minutes.

The scoreline stayed that way until the final session when Steelers popped in three unanswered strikes.

Nikolai Lemtyugov netted 1 minute after the restart and Dowd added his second five minutes later.

Lemtyugov scored on the empty net with 52 seconds remaining to finally end Fife’s challenge.

Flyers had to accept second best at Nottingham Panthers on Saturday when they suffered a 4-3 defeat, three of the home side’s goals coming after Fife were under penalty.

Flyers led 3-2 early in the third period but two goals in the final four minutes cost them the points.

Samuel Herr slotted the winner only 46 seconds from time on the powerplay with Sam Jones called for holding and receiving a two-minute penalty after 57 minutes.

Adam Deutsch had opened the scoring for the home side on the powerplay after two minutes but Dumfries-born Bari Mckenzie replied for Flyers two minutes later.

Jacob Hansen scored Panthers’ second after 32 minutes and Mike Cazzola levelled six minutes later.

Jones scored after 41 minutes to fire Fife ahead but they could not hold on as Jonathan Rheault netted on 56 minutes and Herr slotted home to break Fife hearts after 59 minutes.
