Wilson left disappointed by cup exit
Brechin City manager Mark Wilson couldn’t hide his disappointment after his side were eliminated from the Scottish Cup following a 2-0 defeat by Annan Athletic in the second round replay at Glebe Park on Saturday.
“It’s hugely disappointing to be out of the cup as it was a big opportunity for us,” he said.
“The players did really well last week to give ourselves the chance to progress to the next round but we definitely didn’t rise to the occasion today.
“I thought that Annan were by far the better team and deserved to go through.
“We didn’t start the match well allowing Annan to impose themselves on us and we didn’t really get a grip on things the way I expected.
“I made a change at half-time to address this and, although we got a wee bit of a spark at the beginning of the second half, we didn’t sustain it and we again allowed Annan to take charge.
“I’m really disappointed with the way we performed but I’m not going to be too hard on the players as they’ve been excellent since I’ve come in.
“Despite the disappointment, I’m sure our players will learn from it.
“We had a really young team out on the park and although they’re sitting in the dressingroom really disappointed, they’ll ultimately learn and benefit from the experience.”
Annan were the better team over the 90 minutes but it wasn’t until the 61st minute that they managed to get their noses in front when Scott Mclean was on hand to fire home a closerange finish.
And the same player made sure his team progressed to the third round right at the death when he converted from the penalty spot after he had been impeded in the box by Chris Mclaughlin.
