Sir Alexander Sprot asked the Secretary for Scotland if he was aware of the serious discontent in parts of Scotland on account of the very large increase in the rates, without any improvement in educational facilities, due to the administration of the Education Act, and if he was prepared to meet the situation by new legislation or by checking the expenditure of the new Education Authorities or in any other way? Mr Munro replied that he saw no need for new legislation but had no sympathy for extravagance.

Mr George Mcinroy, who is now manager of the Gowrie Bar, South Street, Perth, was reckoned to be the youngest bar manager ever in Perthshire when he took over at the Bridge of Earn Hotel, near Perth. At the time he had never been on the serving side of the bar, and was only 20. Mr Mcinroy left Dunbarney School at 15 to work for a haulage contractor as a crane driver and storeman. He remained there for five years before taking up the post at Bridge of Earn. Three years later, he has moved to his present job.

Perth and Kinross district councillors will this week be asked to take a decision which could pave the way for destruction of all but a token remnant of one of Scotland’s most important archaeological links with the industrial revolution. If the development control committee approves a recommendation by planning director Denis Munro, Stanley Mills (Scotland) Ltd will receive council approval for demolition of all buildings at the mill site apart from the Bell Mill and the adjacent gatehouse building.

Commuters faced chaos in Perthshire yesterday as trains heading both north and south were cancelled. A damaged track in Dunkeld meant people travelling between Perth, Pitlochry and the Highlands had to be decanted on to buses. Meanwhile, trains heading into the Fair City from the central belt were cancelled after a car crashed into a level crossing in Bridge of Allan, causing “substantial damage”. All services are expected to be back to normal today.
