Anderson eager to propel Fife side toward silverware

-

Steven Anderson knows nothing will ever match his Scottish Cup triumph of 2014 – but that has not dampened his enthusiasm for trying to experience another taste of silverware with Raith Rovers.

The 33-year-old has become a key player for Rovers since joining on loan from St Johnstone in September and will be expected to be a prominent figure again in tonight’s Challenge Cup clash with Elgin City.

The defender famously headed in the opening goal when Saints lifted the Scottish Cup in historic scenes five years ago but his legendary status has not prevented him from falling out of the first-team picture in Perth over the past 12 months.

And as he reaches the tail end of a career devoted to the Mcdiarmid Park side, the stopper is now eager to grasp any chance remaining of success at Raith.

He said: “It might be the Tunnock’s Caramel Wafer Cup or the Challenge Cup as people would call it but players don’t win a lot of trophies in their careers and this is an opportunity for us at Raith Rovers.

“Hopefully we can progress and kick on, and you never know we could win this cup.

“I’ve won a couple of cups myself. I actually won the Challenge Cup with St Johnstone in 2007 and also the Scottish Cup, obviously.

“But I still have that hunger to win as much as I can in my career, because it’s not a long career in football.

“Nothing will ever compare to the Scottish Cup but to win any cup in your career is a great achievement.

“Hopefully we can go a step closer to that and then we’ve got the Scottish Cup the following weekend, so hopefully we can get a run in that as well.

“I’m just enjoying being back playing football again. I went to Partick on loan and thoroughly enjoyed it but went back to St Johnstone and got told I wouldn’t really feature that much.

“At this stage in my career, I need to be playing regular football and hopefully I can do that at Raith Rovers and bring a bit of success.”

City make the quarter-final trip to Stark’s Park on the back of an impressive run in the competition, which has seen them clock up high scoring victories over Hibernian Colts and Brechin City, prior to recording upsets over Dundee and Airdrieonians.
