ATHLETICS

WORLD MOUNTAIN RUNNING CHAMPIONSHIPS

Scottish hill internationalists Andrew Douglas and Jacob Adkin finished seventh and eighth respectively when competing for Great Britain at the World Mountain Running Championships in Villa La Angostura, Patagonia, Argentina.

The heavy rain and strong winds had an impact on all the races as they included river crossings, which were quite high due to the rain. One river crossing proved a costly slip for Douglas who won the World Mountain Cup Series title a couple of months ago.

Among the leading group he slipped and fell on a slippery log serving as a bridge and lost precious ground, finishing in seventh place and 25 seconds off a podium place. The men’s title was won by Joe Gray (USA) in a time of 65.13 with Cesare Maestri (Italy) second and Masrek Chrascina (Czech Rep.) third. Douglas clocked a time of 66.22 and was followed home by European champion Adkin in eighth in 66.33. The Czech Republic took team men’s gold, with the USA silver and Italy bronze. GB finished in fifth. There were top-20 finishes in the junior women’s race with debutant Eden O’dea (Deeside AAC) coming home 14th and Eve Pannone (Eden Runners) two places further back. Defending World Mountain Long Distance champion Charlotte Morgan (Carnethy HR) finished seventh in the 41.8km race

24 hours later, clocking three hours, 58 minutes and 54 seconds, with Christina Simion (Romania) winning in 3:49.57.

James Mclaren (Strathclyde University) headed the field at Anster Haddies Largo Law Hill Challenge. Mclaren finished a clear winner over the 6.5-mile course with its testing climb of 1,000ft up the Law. Mclaren clocked 46 minutes 33 seconds and was followed home by Fife AC’S Russell Hall (48.03), who had one second to spare ahead of Dundee Road Runner Stuart Rodney. Scottish veteran hill champion Heather Anderson was even more dominant in the female standings, finishing 15th overall in 54.36, ahead of runner-up Emma Morris (unatt.) who was 28th in 60.02. Leading results: 1 J Mclaren (Strathclyde Univ.) 46.33, 2 R Hall (Fife AC) 48.03, 3 S Rodney (Dundee RR) 48.04, 4 M Mcconnell (PH Racing) 49.21, 5 S Pringle (Deeside R.) 49.27. 6 R Mcinally (Unatt.) 49.35….29 G Pryde (Lomond HR) 1st over 60. 60.19, 58 E Sanders (Fife AC) 1st over 70. 70.47. 5 H Marshall (Falkland TR) 63.09, 6 M Entwistle (Deeside R.) 65.52…8 J Scott (Fife AC) 1st over 70. 74.15.

The Bob Stark Memorial 5km (for Prostate Cancer Scotland) at Falkland next Sunday is full but a one-mile race is available for juniors starting at 1.30pm. U13s/u11s and U9s can enter on the day at Falkland Village Hall (£1). A 10-minute walk to the start at the estate duck pond.

CURLING

DOUBLE BLOW IN ALBERTA

Perth curlers Robin Brydone and Duncan Mcfadzean have suffered back-to-back defeats at the Red Deer Classic in Alberta.

Brydone, Mcfadzean and teammates Euan Kyle and Dumfries skip Ross Whyte won last Sunday’s Prague Classic final and won their first two games in Canada, but their punishing recent schedule began to catch up with them.

A 10-4 loss to local player Aaron Sluchinski rocked the Scots and they then went down 6-4 to Dominik Maerki’s Swiss-american combination.

They must now beat British Columbia’s Sean Geall to stay in the competition.
