Gowfers pile on misery for struggling Tayport

JUNIORS: Carnoustie hit five as visitors end game with 10 men

- PETER RUNDO

It was top v bottom at Laing Park and North Super League leaders Carnoustie inflicted more misery on Tayport with a 5-0 victory, leaving the visitors still seeking their first win of the season.

Just four minutes had gone when Gordon Macdonald fired the Gowfers ahead. The lead was doubled on 35 minutes with Macdonald converting a Jamie Winter cross following a corner.

Shortly before the break Macdonald headed home to complete his hat-trick.

Things went from bad to worse for the Canniepairt outfit in the second half. First former Port player Steven Mcphee capitalised on more slack defending, then Jamie Mackie was red-carded after a foul on Ryan Roche, leaving them to play the last 25 minutes with 10 men.

Completing the tale of woe, Keiran Sturrock added a fifth in stoppage time to keep the Gowfers seven points clear.

Second-placed Broughty Athletic maintained their challenge by hammering North End 5-0 thanks to a second half scoring spree. It was the third successive match in which the Fed have gone nap. Josh Skelly netted a hattrick and there were singles by Derryn Kesson and Ross Mccord.

After going 10 games unbeaten, things have gone pear-shaped for the Dokens recently, having suffered heavy defeats by the top two clubs.

Downfield produced an amazing finale to sink Scone Thistle 4-0 with three goals in the final five minutes.

The Spiders took the lead through Gavin Thomson in 33 minutes and it remained that way until the 85th minute when Kerr Hay scored before a Jordan Colquhoun penalty and Ross Storrier added two more in stoppage time.

Lochee United just got the better of Forfar West End at Strathmore Park in another tight contest between the sides.

After a goalless first half the Bluebells nosed ahead in 52 minutes when Greg Kirk fired home from the edge of the box following a corner.

After a scare when Dave Rae crashed a shot off the post in 84 minutes, Kevin Buchan finally sealed it for the visitors when he planted a header past Gary Thain minutes later.

Luncarty’s recent poor form has seen them slip from championship contenders to now sit third from bottom and it continued with a 4-3 defeat at in-form Kirrie Thistle, who leapfrog them in the table.

That said, only Dale Reid’s stoppagetime winner as he completed his hattrick, robbed the Bleachers of a share of the spoils. Stewart Russell was the other Kirrie scorer.

Richie Montgomery after 35 minutes, a Sean Fergus penalty in 75 minutes and Sean Burton in 90 minutes were the visitors’ marksmen.

In the North Region, a lack of goal threat meant it was another frustrating afternoon for Montrose Roselea as they slipped to a 1-0 home defeat to Dyce.

A highly-contentious penalty immediately before the interval was all that separated the sides.

The big positive for Roselea was Jordan Harrison’s debut, the defender looking a great addition to their squad and also being a threat at set-pieces.
