Ruthless Cove batter Brechin but Wilson commends resilience

COVE RANGERS 3 BRECHIN CITY 0

Brechin City went down to their fourth successive league defeat with leaders Cove Rangers running out comfortable 3-0 victors at the Balmoral Stadium.

City worked really hard and defended manfully until the closing stages when the hosts’ relentless pressure finally paid off, with them scoring three times in the last 12 minutes to secure a thoroughly deserved victory.

Manager Mark Wilson, although disappointed with the defeat, was fulsome in his praise for his players’ efforts.

“I thought that our gameplan worked really well for the vast majority of the match,” he said.

“Our boys were great and put their bodies on the line and we were always looking to create an opening when we could, and the boys gave everything in their efforts to achieve that.

“However a wee bit of quality then undoes us and although 3-0 doesn’t look great and the fans will see it as another resounding defeat, it’s certainly a lot different from last Saturday at Queen’s Park when the team’s performance on that occasion shocked everyone.

“Despite the position we’re in, spirits remain high in the dressing room.

“The players know the position we’re in and it’s obviously not great but they understand that there’s a long way to go in the season and things will turn for us. We just need to keep believing.

“We’re not going to be facing teams of Cove’s quality every week

“It’s the teams around us in the table who we need to take points from and we’ll be working hard to achieve that in the coming weeks.”

Cove totally dominated the match from start to finish but just as the small band of City fans were beginning to believe their side might just clinch a valuable point, the hosts made the vital breakthrough 12 minutes from time when Mitch Megginson blasted home from close range.

Declan Glass and Scott Ross added a further two goals to make the final scoreline more emphatic.
