Goal hero delivers on Narey promise

UNITED: Mcmullan keeps Tannadice legend happy as he hits 100-mark

- IAN ROACHE

Paul Mcmullan kept his promise to Dundee United legend Dave Narey on his 100th appearance for the Tannadice team.

Mcmullan was presented with a commemorative jersey by Narey before kick-off and he revealed that the club great asked him for a goal against Queen of the South.

It was duly delivered by the wee wideman, who sidefooted home on 22 minutes after being teed up by Louis Appere.

The Tangerines scored again just before half-time through Nicky Clark then Sam Stanton added a third after the break to make it 3-0.

That scoreline would have had the watching Narey smiling, with the Championship pacesetters stretching their lead over secondplaced Ayr United to nine points.

It was a special day for Mcmullan, who made his debut for the Tangerines in a 2-0 Betfred Cup win over Raith Rovers on July 15 2017.

He said: “It was a nice touch from the club to give me the jersey and to get it presented by a legend like David Narey was really good.

“To top it off with a goal was great.

“We had a chat and he asked me for a goal so I did my best to deliver that for him.

“Hopefully, he enjoyed the game and it was certainly nice to meet him.”

Players are often the last to know about statistics relating to their own careers but Mcmullan did have an inkling that he was about to hit the century.

He said: “I had seen in the match programme a couple of weeks ago that I was getting close.

“I then saw something online and that confirmed I had made it.

“It is a nice achievement. “It doesn’t seem like it has taken a long time, to be honest.

“It has gone in quite quickly because it has only been two and a bit years.

“That’s a lot of games and hopefully there are a lot more to come for me.”
