Fire crews tackle blaze at Dundee takeaway started by cable issue

-

A Dundee takeaway is set to close for several days after a fire started in its kitchen in the early hours of yesterday.

Firefighters were summoned to Shero’s Kitchen on Aberlady Crescent, Whitfield, shortly before 6.40am.

Two appliances from Kingsway were sent to the culde-sac business after a member of the public reported smoke billowing from the building.

A crowd of around 10 fire officers successfully extinguished the blaze in the kitchen and left around 8am.

Police briefly attended to interview witnesses and speak to attending fire officers.

Takeaway workers came to assess the damage, which is not thought to be serious.

However the business is likely to be closed for a number of days while the extent of the blaze is assessed and repairs are carried out.

One worker said: “Hopefully everything will be OK.

“There was some kind of problem with a cable in the roof and we ended up with a fire.

“We don’t know exactly what happened but obviously we will have to be closed for a couple of days while we sort out things like insurance.”

The connecting Best-one Kellyfield post office opened as normal yesterday. A worker reported seeing a lot of smoke.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue service spokeswoman said: “We received a call at 6.39am to attend an address on Aberlady Crescent in Dundee, following reports of smoke coming from a building.

“Two appliances attended from Kingsway Fire Station.

“The fire has been extinguished and crew remained on the scene until the stop order came in shortly before 8am.”
