Sports awards shortlist reveals large field of quality contenders
The annual Angusalive sports awards shortlist has been announced.
Driver Sandy Mitchell, swimmer Sophie Smith and hockey captain Chris Bonnar will compete for Sports Personality of the Year at the ceremony on March 13 at the Reid Hall in Forfar.
Club Volunteer of the Year nominees are Derek Traill for cricket/football/bowls, Lesley Hadden for swimming and Ewen Matthew for golf.
Coach of the Year candidates are Lorna Whike, swimming, Niamh Donnelly, athletics and Catriona Mclean, equestrian.
The Outstanding Commitment Award is between Dave Mcgregor, ju-jitsu, Grant Hutchison, cricket/table tennis and Ronald Milne, running.
Becky Findlay, Northmuir Primary School, Beth Steele, Forfar Academy, Lorna Valentine, Arbroath Primary
Schools, Iain Lockhart, Monifieth HS and Caroline Campbell, Montrose Primary School and Academy will fight it out for School Sports Volunteer of the Year.
The Sports Personality of the Year Award for People with a Disability category consists of Bill Fairweather, golf, Ciara Roulston, para-triathlon, and Beth Greig, swimming.
Young Sports Personality of the Year contenders are Ben Hudson, tennis, Inca Maguire, curling, James Craik, curling and Rory Gifford, dinghy sailing.
Brechin Buccanneers, Strathmore Cricket Club and Abbey Bowling Club are all in the running for Club of the Year. Team of the Year will be decided between Montrose Girls U15s football, Strathmore Silverbacks, rugby league, and St Thomas 2nd Division league, swimming.
