“Dundee butchers will rather close their shops than handle this Port Darwin meat.” This declaratio­n was made by a prominent member of the trade to The Courier yesterday. He stated that while he had not actually seen a sample of the Western Australian beef, he had been informed that it was very rough – the worst quality of foreign beef that had yet been seen. The butchers in the city were determined not to have anything to do with it , with many stating they would rather close their shops.

50 years ago

Two men were arrested yesterday after 24 hours of intensive police inquiries in Fife, Dundee and Angus and charged with the St Valentine’s Day murder of a Dundee taxi driver. The victim was George Martin, a 30-year-old father of four young children. The men are to appear before the sheriff at Cupar this morning. The discovery of Mr Martin’s body on a lonely service road at Kirkton Woods, between Tayport and St Michaels, sparked off a huge hunt. Mr Martin had been stabbed and shot.

The European Commission president, Jacques Santer, will clash with Prime Minister John Major in the growing row over Britain’s passport controls. Mr Santer will announce to Euro MPS his intention to produce proposals before the end of the year to ban all border controls, in line with the agreements on the free movement of people across the Union. But Mr Major signalled a battle ahead when he told the Commons he would fight to force other member states to keep their word over the retention of border checks.

Extra police patrols have been deployed in Brechin to tackle a 40-strong group of youths amid claims some have been armed. Police are cracking down on the marauding youngsters who are terrorisin­g residents with their anti-social behaviour. Teenagers from Forfar and Montrose are congregati­ng in the town alongside local youths, with some neighbours suggesting knives and a golf club have been involved. Police Scotland stated there is “absolutely no suggestion” anyone has had a knife or weapon.
