WORLD RECORD BROKEN

Joshua Cheptegei has shattered the 5km world record after he clocked a time of 12 minutes and 51 seconds at the Monaco Run.

The 23-year-old Ugandan – the 2019 world 10,000m champion – clipped 27 seconds off the previous record of 13:18 set by Kenya’s Rhonex Kipruto en route to his 10km world record in Valencia on January 12.

French runner Jimmy Gressier finished second in 13:18 to break the European record of 13:29 set by Julien Wanders in the same race last year.

CURLING

WELCOME WIN FOR CRAIK

Forfar curler James Craik posted a welcome victory at the World Junior Championships in Krasnoyarsk, Russia, yesterday. The Scottish junior champion desperately needed a win after losing his opening two round-robin fixtures on Saturday, and it was third time lucky yesterday.

Despite trailing Swede Daniel Magnusson early on, Craik and teammates Niall Ryder, Blair Haswell and Mark Watt refused to panic and soon led 6-1. They triumphed 7-3 to get back on track for this weekend’s medal play-offs. They face Germany next.

FOOTBALL

SEASON NEARLY BLOWN

OFF COURSE

The wind and torrential rain at the weekend provided problems in the shape of Storm Dennis which almost obliterated the whole of the scheduled Midlands football fixtures apart from one match, writes our Amateur correspondent. Thankfully the North of Tay fourth round tie between Lowson United and Vale of Earn survived courtesy of Forfar’s Community 3G and a thrilling encounter it proved to be.

Like last week it was an electrifying opening to the game by the Forfar men with Craig Simpson knocking home for them again on the twominute mark.

If Liam Godfrey had hit the back of the net rather than the bar just afterwards then things might have been more straightforward for the Forfar side.

Instead Earn equalised from the penalty spot after a rash tackle by Howie.

Then 10 minutes after the break the Perthshire side went ahead 2-1 and had Lowson on the back foot for a while.

But the home side turned things around, hitting the bar twice and then the post before Scott Fullerton equalised, slotting into the bottom corner from 18 yards to make it 2-2. Before the end keeper Kyle Millar had two fantastic saves to keep United in the game as extra time came and went.

Hero Millar then went on to save two of Vale’s penalty kicks in the shoot-out to see his side through 4-3 on penalties.

Wet it may have been but a worthwhile watch for those spectators keen enough to endure the atrocious conditions.

Weather permitting, North of Tay fixtures will prevail again next weekend.

After Lowson’s success two all Midlands ties – Broughty United v Finavon and Tayside Fire Brigade v Menzieshill – will ensure at least three Midlands sides make the last eight of the district cup competition. The first match is difficult to call but Menzieshill, with a return to form, should get the better of the Firies, who appear to be heading for Saturday Morning football next season.

AHSFP, Barnhill and Shotz are engaged against either Perthshire or Saturday morning sides so the potential is there to command six of the eight quarter spots.

HOCKEY

SEVEN-UP PERTHSHIRE Perthshire played their postponed Scottish Cup match against Highland and ran out comfortable 7-1 winners. Stephen Dick and Michal Czub each scored twice with Adam Czub, Neil Robertson and Tom Cahalin each chipping in with one apiece. Perthshire now play Grove Menzieshill in the quarter-finals on Sunday March 8.

Grange increased their lead in the Premiership with a 4-0 win over Hillhead.

They now lead Western Wildcats by five points and Menzieshill by nine at the halfway stage.

Hillhead remain one point ahead of Wanderers at the foot of the table

EUROHOCKEY CHALLENGE Western Wildcats got their Eurohockey Indoor Club Challenge

I at Varna-kamchia, Bulgaria, under way with a 4-3 win over Hungarian side Soroksari – but the victory was far from straightforward.

They were 2-1 behind after seven minutes but showed up well with a goal in each of the second and third quarters to lead 3-2. Soroksari equalised with three minutes remaining but former Harris and Menzieshill player Hamish Galt netted Western’s fourth within a minute to seal a 4-3 win. Wildcats crashed 4-2 against Danish side Slagelse Western, meaning they needed to beat Cardiff in their last Pool B match to qualify for the promotion pool. However, they were largely undone by three goals for Cardiff in the second quarter.

Western did pull one back in the third quarter and equalised early in the fourth, all three scored by Galt, but two late goals sealed a 5-3 win for Cardiff, leaving Western two games to avoid relegation.

Western went down 4-1 to Czech side Rakovnik in the first of the relegation pool matches, with Galt again on the mark, but went on to secure Scotland’s place at Challenge 1 level with a 9-0 win over Bulgarian side Slavia.

Inverleith will be Scotland’s representatives next season after beating Menzieshill in the First Division final on gala day.

MADRAS HELD BY STUDENTS

A handful of Midland matches did manage to beat the weather at the weekend.

Madras dropped their first league points of the season. A comfortable 3-1 lead over Dundee University II at half-time was unexpectedly eroded when the students fought back to steal a point against the Division 1 leaders.

Defending champions Wanderers II were unable to capitalise as they too were forced to share the spoils when Bethany Calderwood and Ailise Milroy claimed parity for Perthshire II. Kinross II made no mistake with a clear-cut victory over Brechin Thistles. Shona Graham, Wendy Marshall, Katie Clayton and Sophia Henderson contributed to the 4-0 result.

● Results: Championship League 1 – George Heriot’s FP 0 Stirling University 2. Championship League 3 – Highland 3 Kelburne II 1.
