Dundee residents blame parking charges for street congestion

-

Angry residents claim new parking charges in Dundee’s West End have resulted in cars being left to clog up surrounding streets.

Charges have been introduced at a number of car parks, including those on Pennycook Lane, Miller’s Wynd and Roseangle.

Residents on nearby Tait’s Lane claim the decision to introduce charges has led to people leaving car parks empty and parking their vehicles on the street.

One man claimed the Pennycook Lane car park is sometimes only 20% full since the charges have been implemented.

Charlie Carrie, who lives nearby, said he was concerned about congestion on Tait’s Lane. He said: “The parking around the lane has been more congested in recent months.

“I can only see more commuters adding to the problems.”

Another resident, who placed notices on vehicles parked on the street urging drivers “not to park opposite a yard entrance”, said the recent changes had made a long-standing problem worse.

She said: “There has been a problem here for a number of years. A fire appliance couldn’t get down here one day recently because of the way cars were parked. The changes at Pennycook are adding to this and will continue to do so.”

Mark Flynn, deputy convener of Dundee City Council’s city development committee, said: “As the charges have been in place for less than three weeks, it is too early to reach any conclusions about the wider and longer-term effects of the introduction of charges.

“The implications are being kept under review.”
