Tanker and van collide on A90

INCIDENT: Trapped driver cut free from van by firefighte­rs

A van driver was last night being treated in hospital after a collision involving a milk tanker on the A90 near Laurenceki­rk.

The man, who had to be cut free by firefighte­rs, was taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary after the incident, which happened around 9.20am yesterday.

Police, firefighte­rs and paramedics were sent to the scene following a series of 999 calls.

Milk from the tanker was spilled across the busy road as a result of the crash.

A man was taken to hospital yesterday following a serious crash which closed part of the main road from Aberdeen to Dundee.

The A90 was shut southbound at Fordoun, just north of Laurenceki­rk, following the collision involving a white van and a Müller milk tanker which happened around 9.20am.

Police, firefighte­rs and paramedics were sent to the scene following a series of 999 calls.

The accident left milk spilled across the busy road and the van a crumpled wreck.

The driver of the van had to be cut free by firefighte­rs using hydraulic gear after he was trapped in the vehicle.

He was taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary for treatment.

The extent of his injuries was not known last night.

The accident caused major disruption to traffic throughout the day with debris strewn across the carriagewa­y and local diversions put in place.

Accident investigat­ors were in attendance in the afternoon.

Police officers were also seen walking along both sides of the carriagewa­y.

A police spokeswoma­n said: “Police were called around 9.20am to the A90 southbound at Fordoun following a crash between a van and an HGV.

“A man has been taken to hospital for treatment.”

Motorists were being redirected on to the A92 Stonehaven to Dundee coastal road.

Traffic was heavy on the route between Inverbervi­e and Montrose, as well as on the country roads in the area.

Megabus services and Stagecoach East Scotland services through Angus and the Mearns were also delayed as a result of the diversions.

A Scottish Ambulance Service spokesman said: “We received a call at 9.20am to attend a road traffic collision on the A90 near Fordoun.

“We dispatched two ambulances and our trauma team to the scene.

We transporte­d one male patient to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.”

A fire and rescue spokeswoma­n said four appliances – from Stonehaven, Laurenceki­rk, Montrose and North Anderson Drive in Aberdeen – were sent to the scene at 9.30am.

She said: “We were in attendance. “Two lorries were involved and the equipment in use was hydraulic rescue equipment.”

Traffic Scotland was advising motorists to avoid the route and allow extra time for their journey.
