Schaber says Flyers positive for live TV clash with Devils

Victory over Steelers sets up Fifers for big game in Cardiff

- NIGEL DUNCAN

Chase Schaber netted as Fife Flyers cut down Elite League pace-setters Sheffield Steelers in what could prove to be a significant result for the Kirkcaldy club.

Unsurprisingly, the Canadian says the mood in the Fifers camp is good going into battle tonight – live on Freesportstv from 7.30 – at second-top Cardiff Devils.

They are looking for more valuable points in their bid to sneak into the endof-season play-offs.

Schaber, feeling positive after Sunday’s 3-1 home win over the Yorkshire combine, believes his side match up well against the Welsh outfit.

The Cardiff clash is the first of three big games coming up for Flyers.

They face a trip to East Coast rivals Dundee Stars on Saturday (7pm) before hosting Manchester Storm on Sunday (5.30pm).

The forward, 29, said: “They are massive games for us and we play Cardiff pretty well.

“Dundee and Manchester are right in front of us but the boys are feeling good right now.”

Schaber said Fife played a 60-minute game to defeat Sheffield, adding: “In the past two weeks we have started to see the results we have been looking for.

“Things are going in the right direction.”

Fife, however, need points now as there are only 10 games left in the regular season.

The Kirkcaldy club anchor the table with 30 points from 44 games with Stars six points ahead having played a game less.

Storm occupy the eighth and final play-off place. They are currently on 37 points from 43 games – the same points as seventh-placed Glasgow Clan who have played a game less.

Schaber – delighted to find the net on Sunday after his recent personal goal drought – said: “Sunday was one of our best performances of the season. It was a good hockey game.

“We had a good start and played solid (hockey) throughout the whole game.

“This is what we have been trying to achieve all year. We have to keep working at it and staying with it.”

Elsewhere, Glasgow Clan entertain third-placed Nottingham Panthers (7.30pm) looking to bounce back after weekend defeats at home to Guildford Flames (2-4) and at Coventry Blaze (5-3).
