Renault’s popular Megane hatchback has been updated, with a refreshed RS hot hatch model and the first plug-in hybrid variant.

Visual changes include redesigned bumpers with new air deflectors to improve aerodynamics, and the addition of LED headlights.

The Megane’s revamped interior has a new 9.3-in screen for the multimedia system and a 10-in digital instrument cluster on range-topping models.

Other versions of the Megane get a 7-in touchscreen, but all have Apple Carplay and Android Auto.

A new centre console provides improved usability, while the cruise control switches have now been moved to the steering wheel.

Driver assistance systems such as adaptive cruise control and blind spot monitoring have been enhanced with a highway and traffic jam companion. This system can keep the car in-lane as well as bringing it to a stop in traffic and subsequently pulling away once the car in front moves.

The plug-in hybrid uses a 1.6-litre petrol engine mated to two electric motors and a new, multi-mode clutchless transmission, which Renault claims offers “excellent efficiency and barely noticeable gear changes”.

Making 158bhp, the system features a 9.8kwh, 400V battery that allows for a fully electric range of about 31 miles, and the ability to travel at up to 84mph, on electric power alone.

It will be offered first on the estate version, with a hatchback being launched later. No economy figures are quoted at this stage.

A new RS Line trim will be added to the line-up with sportier styling and larger alloy wheels.

Prices and specifications have yet to be published, but the new Megane will be on sale from July.
