Why we all have a stake in this presidential election
As I type, my preferred candidate for the Democratic nomination in the US presidential election has just dropped out of the race. I’m going to bang on about it a bit. Elizabeth Warren, Massachusetts senator, law professor and inspiration in progressive politics, was previously a front-runner to take on Donald Trump in November. Now, after lacklustre performances in debates, disappointing results in the primaries and, frankly, much sexism against her, Warren has stepped aside.
Even now, she’s showing her class, saying she will keep working for ordinary people, including campaigning for better healthcare and childcare. “My job is to keep fighting,” she said.
It’s been an eventful few weeks in the race for the Democratic ticket. Wealthy former New York City
Mayor Michael Bloomberg quit after a controversial and obscenely-expensive campaign. Fellow candidates Amy Klobuchar and Pete Buttegieg are also recent dropouts from a field that once included dozens of candidates; at one point, the Lesser Known Candidates Forum featured 33 Democratic hopefuls.
That leaves us with a likely choice between former vice-president Joe Biden, a mumbling, slightly bumbling centrist, and Vermont Senator and archleftie Bernie Sanders, who amuses me greatly.
As you can tell, I’m fascinated by the whole thing. Like millions of non-americans across the world, I’m focused on this contest despite being unable to vote in it. That’s because we all have a stake in this election.
Any other mammal, be it Joe Biden, Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, Katy Perry, Dick Van Dyke or Barack Obama’s Portuguese water dog, Bo, would make a better president than the demented white supremacist currently infecting the White House. It doesn’t matter who runs against Trump, as long as they win.
Then the leader of the free world will again believe in freedom… as well as climate change, vaccines, and treating people with compassion. This is a fight for the soul of the human race, and a chance to wrest our civilisation back from the brink.
And Elizabeth Warren is right: let’s keep fighting, and stand up for our beliefs, wherever we may live.
