COVE RANGERS 3 BRECHIN CITY 2

Brechin City went down to a 3-2 defeat from runaway league leaders and firm title favourites Cove Rangers at Balmoral Stadium.

Despite the closeness of the final scoreline this was a match the hosts totally dominated.

They grabbed the lead after just 13 minutes from the penalty spot with Mitch Megginson converting after he had been brought down in the box by Alex Petkov.

Megginson doubled his side’s lead three minutes into the second half when he slotted home a Jamie Masson pass with Masson returning the compliment six minutes later when he drilled home a Megginson cross.

At that stage of the match Cove looked in the mood to add a few more goals but to City’s credit, they kept their shape and composure, continued to work really hard and managed to pull a goal back in the 62nd minute when former Cove midfielder Martin Scott netted from close range.

Cove, however, continued to enjoy the lion’s share of pressure and possession but it was City who scored the final goal right at the death when Scott converted from the penalty spot after he had been nudged in the box by Daniel Higgins.

The result leaves City still firmly marooned at the bottom of the table, seven points adrift of Albion Rovers having taken just three points from a possible 27 since the turn of the year but despite the defeat manager Mark Wilson wasn’t too downhearted at the end of the 90 minutes.

“Although we ended up getting defeated by 3-2, there was a lot I was happy with,” he said.

“When Cove went 3-0 up they might have felt that they were on course to score a few more goals but we had a number of good individual performances and if the game had lasted just a few more minutes we might have been able to put Cove under a bit of pressure.

“There have been occasions when I haven’t been happy with the performances but today the boys gave their all.

“Cove are a very smart, bright team who are very difficult to play against and although we rode our luck at times I thought that we caused them a few problems and that’s all I can ask of the players.

“Today was undoubtedly the hardest match we’ve had to face but if we can show the same level of performance against lesser teams in our remaining matches we’ll definitely pick up points.”
