The Courier interviewe­d various bakers on the bread situation last night. It was ascertaine­d that, on an average, Dundee bakers have no more than a fortnight’s supply of flour in hand and thus, if the price of bread is not increased until April 12, they will have fully two weeks to supply bread at present rates, although in the interval flour will have gone up by 19s 6d per sack. One baker stated that during this interval there would be a shortage of bread in Dundee for, after all, bakers could not be philanthro­pists.

Aberfeldy branch of the Scottish National Farmers’ Union is again to take up with Perth and Kinross County Council “the most unsatisfac­tory” bridge position on the Ballinluig-aberfeldy (A827) road. This is Aberfeldy’s main link with the Great North Road, yet all traffic has to pass over the old railway bridge over the River Tummel. The original road bridge, which last year was restricted to light traffic, has now been closed completely because of further serious structural deteriorat­ion.

The tale of Lyne the collie has a particular­ly happy ending after she survived 17 days stuck in a tiny space without any food or water. She emerged from her ordeal having suffered nothing more than some weight loss. However, if it had not been for the sharp ears of a farm worker, Lyne might have gone on imprisoned until it was too late. The three-year-old belongs to Mr Ken Robertson of Heathersta­cks Farm near Forfar. The courageous collie owes her salvation to Peter Caul from Kirriemuir, who heard a single muffled bark. Local

Dundee will be pitched as the “key to Scotland” in a bid to turn it into the country’s cruise ship gateway. The £1 billion waterfront developmen­t will be used to draw tourists from around the globe to “Dock in the City of Design”. Dundee Port owner Forth Ports will head to the cruise ship industry’s most significan­t worldwide event in the USA next month to promote the city and its hinterland. Local businesses will also aim to capitalise on the cruise ship market.
