The revolution in Germany is developing in a more serious fashion than the bloodless coup of Saturday morning seemed to indicate. At the call of the deposed Government, and also of the Independent Socialists, a general strike has been declared and is spreading throughout the country. Encounters between the workers on the one hand and troops and sailors on the other have already taken place at Kiel and Frankfurt. One man was killed and several wounded in the Frankfurt fight.

A presidential motorcade became lost in the heart of Washington in an embarrassing mix-up that could only have happened on Friday the 13th. With President Nixon riding in his bullet-proof limousine, the 10-car procession twice roared past its intended destination, the Washington Technical Institute. An £8 million, 70-unit housing development – including a new church a dentist’s surgery and a 60-bed nursing home – is planned for a site to the north of Monifieth. Tulloch Homes (Tayside) Ltd, the Inverness-based firm already established in the Dundee area, wants to build the development on a 4.2 hectare site between Panmurefield and the main Dundee-arbroath road. It has applied for outline permission from the district council and hopes to finish the development by the end of 1997.

St Andrews woman Margaret Jackson would not be living the life she is today if Maureen Jack had not selflessly donated one of her kidneys a decade ago. Mrs Jack became one of the first people in Scotland to become an altruistic donor. She went on to form a bond with the woman who received the organ. This is unusual as most donors and recipients have little contact. Mrs Jack said that the operation – a “minor inconvenience” to her – had made a “huge difference” to Mrs Jackson.
