100 years ago

A terrible tragedy occurred in Dundee on Saturday night, Harry Reeves being shot by a companion, Frederick George, 18 years of age. Both were members of the Royal Air Force, attached to the Air Station at Stannergat­e. Reeves was about 20 years of age. The weapon made use of was a revolver which George carried, and which when taken possession of by the police was found to have been partially loaded. Reform Street was the scene of the tragedy and George was completely unnerved by the occurrence.

Jean Robertson, a 20-year-old St Andrews University student, stopped off in Kirkcaldy yesterday for a lunch-time break on her 100-mile walk to her home in Selkirk. No, the bus strike has nothing to do with her efforts! Jean is just preparing for a 100-mile walk she will make next month as part of the Students’ Charities Appeal. Yesterday’s break was taken at the Kirkcaldy firm of Nairnwilli­amson Ltd, who are donating £100 to Jean’s money-raising efforts.

Japanese police were mobilised last night for a massive investigat­ion into the nerve gas attack on the Tokyo subway that killed seven people and injured more than 4,700. Hundreds of experts scoured for clues to explain the motive and who was behind the attack that shocked a nation with little experience of indiscrimi­nate violence. No one has claimed responsibi­lity for what officials called a deliberate, indiscrimi­nate attempt at mass murder using the gas sarin. Around 10,000 police were mobilised.

Angus residents have been banned from crossing the border to dump their rubbish in Dundee skip sites. The withdrawal of the existing informal arrangemen­t means some rural residents from Sidlaw are facing a 40-mile round trip to dispose of waste in Arbroath. Permits for vans being used to dispose of waste at the Baldovie and Riverside recycling centres will only be available to Dundee residents. Dundee City Council is urging people in Angus to use the facilities provided by their own local authority.
