The death of an eight-year-old boy in Dundee remains “unexplained”, Police Scotland has said.

The young boy is said to have fallen ill within a property on Dens Road during the early hours of Wednesday.

He was rushed to Ninewells Hospital, where he died.

A small police presence remained throughout the day and into the morning of yesterday, when CID officers were seen entering the house.

Three ambulances were at the scene before the boy was taken to hospital.

One neighbour, Declan Arnott, looked out of his window to see what was going on when he heard the vehicles arrive.

He said: “I heard sirens and heard the ambulance doors opening, so I went to my window, which looks over their garden, to see what was going on as I thought it was maybe the police, but it was the ambulance.

“The first one wasn’t a proper ambulance, but one of the support unit

ones. Then another one arrived, the Mercedes Sprinter ones.

“They put on a full kit, which I guess they have to do now because of coronavirus, and ran into the house.

“A third ambulance arrived, a proper one, and the paramedics put on the PPE kit as well and went in.

“About 10 to 15 minutes later the big ambulance moved out on to the road so it was closer to the door. The other vehicles were already parked by the front gate.”

Mr Arnott said the boy was then brought out on a stretcher to the ambulance.

Mr Arnott said there was a police presence all day on Wednesday and at about 12.30pm yesterday three police cars came to the house as well as a CID vehicle.

He added: “They went into the house. Fifteen minutes later the police car went away and there hasn’t been any police since.

“It’s really sad what happened. You don’t expect it to happen in your area.”

A police spokeswoman said: “We were made aware of the sudden death of an eight-year-old child around 12.50am on Wednesday May 6.

“The boy took unwell at an address on Dens Road, Dundee, and was taken to Ninewells Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

“The death is being treated as unexplained and inquiries are ongoing. A report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal.”
