TEXO ACCOMMODATION: Specially designed modular buildings could provide way for airports to operate again

A Dundee firm that specialises in modular buildings is in talks with airport owners across the UK about installing a range of screening stations for coronavirus testing.

Texo Accommodation has designed flexible, rapidly-deployable facilities for sites of critical national infrastructure such as ports, airports and heliports, logistics centres and major construction sites.

Based at the Port of Dundee, Texo Accommodation is experienced at providing bespoke modular units for a variety of uses across range of industrial sectors including offshore energy, aviation and construction.

Managing director Richard Lamb said he expected the company’s range of modular offices, welfare spaces and sanitation facilities to be in high demand as companies consider what capacity they need for social distancing, screening and additional hand washing facilities.

He said: “Requirements on how to work safely have been changing quickly and owners and managers of facilities have been adapting to ensure they can continue to support essential services.

“We expect virus testing and social distancing will be required for the foreseeable future.

“However, as lockdown conditions ease there will be a need for flexible space to accommodate a return to the ‘new normal’.

“Our solution reflects the need for airport, heliport and port operators and the organisations that offer services at these locations to provide robust screening to prevent the spread of Covid19, while also meeting requirements for social distancing and general welfare.”

Texo Accommodation’s guide for temporary screening facilities has been with specialist aviation sector advisers and architects.

It offers owners and service providers at sites of critical national infrastructure insight into the design and deployment of temporary modular buildings designed to ensure the highest standards of safety, including employee and passenger testing facilities on departure and arrival.

Depending on where customers are based, the modular buildings would either be manufactured or fabricated at Dundee or Texo Accommodation’s sister site in Blyth.

Texo said its units can be fabricated at a rate of 50 a week. Units leave the factory fully tested and commissioned.

The modular concept is designed and manufactured by Texo Accommodation partner ELA Container, a German modular building specialist.

ELA has delivered a number of placements of modular systems in the UK and Europe to support customers during the Covid-19 pandemic.

We expect virus testing and social distancing will be required for the foreseeable future. RICHARD LAMB
