We have too many churches and too few people in them. In a few years the demand for additional church accommodation will be proportionately as clamant as the demand for house accommodation is today. The former appears to be the view of the Church of Scotland as expressed by Mr William Whitelaw in the General Assembly today, while the latter view, stated by the Convener of the Church and Manse Building Committee remained uncontradicted in the United Free Church Assembly.

The Scottish Tourist Board is not prepared to help finance an information kiosk near Muirdrum, some two miles from Carnoustie. Carnoustie Publicity and Development Association were prepared to staff a kiosk on the main Dundee-arbroath road provided they got a grant from the board. Some members had expressed the view that quite a number of motorists using the main road never saw Carnoustie. An information stand near the crossroads would provide publicity and useful information.

Dundee Royal Infirmary has “outgrown its usefulness.” It must be closed and its services transferred to Ninewells to safeguard the care and safety of thousands of patients, senior doctors warned last night. In advance of tonight’s public meeting to debate the DRI transfer proposal, three of the infirmary’s most prominent clinicians told The Courier they hoped the public could accept its best interest would be served by closing the 200-year-old hospital. Many senior doctors have backed the £28 million transfer.

A review of mental health care in Tayside has revealed a catalogue of flaws, including dangerous patients being able to discharge themselves from hospital. The interim report by the independent inquiry into mental health services details a series of failings, from risk assessments not being properly carried out to an inability to stop illegal drug use. The report, by David Strang, says the transfer of services from the Mulberry Unit at Stracathro to Dundee’s Carseview Centre showed “little consideration” for patients.
