Anderson excited by new team

-

Steven Anderson reckons St Johnstone have landed a dream team to succeed Tommy Wright.

The Perth club’s all-time appearance record holder is tipping Callum Davidson to rise to the challenge.

And if, as expected, former striker Steven Maclean is drafted into his coaching team, Anderson believes Saints are well-placed to build on Wright’s legacy.

Anderson – who secured legendary status alongside

Maclean with their Scottish Cup final goals against Dundee United six years ago – admits the Northern Irishman will be a hard act to follow.

But he insists his former teammates have the qualities required to succeed at Perth along with caretaker Alec Cleland and coach Alan Maybury.

“I’m not surprised the club wanted Callum but they have done really well to tempt him away from a club like Millwall,” admitted the long-time Saints defender, who recently ended his 16-year ties to the club after a loan spell with Raith Rovers.

“But obviously there was the appeal of being his own man and at a club he knows inside out.

“And if he can bring in Macca, that will be a great move.

“It would be a tough task for anyone trying to match the success Tommy had down the years and Callum also has to deal with the impact of the pandemic.

“But the squad is in good shape and he has gained a lot of experience down south.”

Anderson is backing Davidson to make the grade.

He added: “As an assistant there’s not much pressure on you. So it will be different now for Callum.

“But he has a support network round about him and Callum has the advantage of knowing the club and the players.

“I’m sure he can call Tommy or some of the ex-players if he was ever looking for advice.

“But knowing Callum he will have his own plans and how to implement them.”
