Children feared for their safety after drunk man followed them and made suggestive comments

-

Three terrified children were followed by a drunken man who made suggestive comments.

Jonathan Mason, of Baldovan Terrace, Dundee, was sitting on a wall near Tesco in Brechin when he targeted the youngsters, who were aged eight, nine and 16.

Dundee Sheriff Court was told Mason had been experiencing mental health difficulties and a sheriff said he did not believe there was a significant sexual element to his conduct.

The court heard the children were walking to Tesco to buy sweets at around 8pm on Wednesday.

After reaching the top of High Street, they became aware of Mason.

Prosecutor Gavin Burton said: “The accused appeared to be drinking from a can and was shouting.

“All three continued walking towards Panmure Street and the accused started following them.”

The three children entered the Tesco shop, where they alerted staff.

Mason, 43, pled guilty from custody to causing the children to suffer fear and alarm by shouting, making sexual remarks and following them.

He also admitted breaching a curfew condition by being outside his house after 7pm.

Solicitor advocate Jim Laverty said Mason was “ashamed” by his actions and had no sexual interest in children whatsoever.

Sheriff Alastair Carmichael deferred sentence until October for reports. Mason was released on bail with conditions.

“At present, I do not think there is a significant sexual element,” said Sheriff Carmichael.
