Mellon still remaining cautious
Dundee United manager Micky Mellon can look to add to his squad now that he does not have to worry about arbitration panels, writes Ian Roache.
He has already lined up wide player Luke Bolton on loan from Manchester City but the new Tannadice gaffer will not necessarily be splashing the cash.
Mellon said: “I am very aware of not taking a sledgehammer to things.
“First and foremost, if I bring someone in they will have to fit into the group.
“If a player becomes available that we think will make Dundee United a better team and the answer is yes we will look at it,” he added.
“At the minute we have plenty of plates spinning and we hope to get some over the line very soon.
“There are areas, either numerically or adding quality, we need to bring in players.
“I wanted to take my time and see how things work at the football club.
“We will do things right. “I’m not talking about 10 players or anything like that,” added Mellon, who was speaking to the Dode Fox podcast. “It will be about getting the right players in to help us win games.”
Mellon was joined by his new assistant boss Stevie Frail in the dugout for Saturday’s 1-1 closeddoors friendly draw against Kilmarnock at Tannadice.
He believes he has the right man to help him take the Tangerines forward.
The United boss added: “I wanted to take my time and see how things work at the football club. I could see the chemistry between Bow (Dave Bowman), Granty (Brian Grant) and the players.
“I knew I could bring in another staff member but it was important to bring in the right guy to complement them and the players.
“So we feel like we have the right guy to improve the blend. Everything is in place the way I want it to be.
“I feel we have right people in place and am happy with what we have.”
