Perth jet skiers urged to behave ‘responsibly’ amid noise worries

Noisy jet skiers using the River Tay in Perth have been urged to behave in a “responsible” manner.

A healthcare worker said the noise is “distressing” for residents at the nearby retirement flats.

She told The Courier: “I visited an elderly person for work recently in the retirement flats on the Tay, who was distressed by the noise.

“There are many residents who are distressed by this.

“This has been going on for several years. Every nice day in summer at high tide the jet skiers are out.

“There is noise but also a major risk to other water users and swimmers, along with wildlife, otters and beavers which live in this area.”

MSP for Mid Scotland and Fife, Murdo Fraser said: “I have been contacted by residents who have expressed their concerns about the excessive noise and disturbance caused by jet ski users on the River Tay, particularly at weekends.

“I understand the concerns they have, both about the noise and also the potential disturbance to wildlife in the area.

“I would ask those who operate the jet skis to behave in a responsible fashion and I will continue to investigate to see what can be done to improve the situation.”

Colleague, Alexander Stewart MSP said: “It is understood that when these activities begin to encroach into anti-social hours and with potentially unsafe behaviour, especially during the summer, that this becomes a real issue.”

Perth and Kinross Council said while jet skiers have a right to use the water, they are urged to “be considerate” of nearby residents.
