‘Much-loved’ father died in Arbroath after alleged repeated stabbing

A 41-year-old has appeared in court accused of murdering a “much-loved” father in Arbroath.

Jackie Doig, of Strathcarr­on Place, Dundee, is accused of murdering Dundee man Frankie Melvin, 34, in the Angus town on Wednesday.

The former Menzieshil­l High School pupil died after allegedly being pursued and repeatedly stabbed by Doig in Spitalfiel­d Place.

Doig made no plea after appearing in private on petition at Dundee Sheriff Court yesterday.

Mr Melvin’s family described him as a “much loved son, father, brother, partner and uncle”, adding “his loss will be sorely felt by many”.

Sheriff George Way remanded Doig in custody and continued the case for further examinatio­n.

Doig is expected to appear again at a later date.

Jackie Doig, of Strathcarr­on Place, Dundee, is accused of assaulting Frankie Melvin, 34, before pursuing him and repeatedly stabbing him on the body with a knife and murdering him.

He made no plea after appearing at Dundee Sheriff Court yesterday in relation to the incident on Newbigging Drive and Spitalfiel­d Place on Wednesday.

Sheriff George Way remanded Doig, represente­d by solicitor Jim Caird, in custody and continued the case for further examinatio­n.

He is expected to appear in court again at a later date.

Mr Melvin’s family have spoken of their heartache in a statement released through Police Scotland. It said: “Frankie was a much-loved son, father, brother, partner and uncle. His loss will be sorely felt by many.

“We would ask that we are given privacy to come to terms with his loss at this time.”

A major police investigat­ion was launched after the body of Mr Melvin, originally from Dundee, was found on Spitalfiel­d Place, Arbroath, at about 6pm.

Police cordoned off Spitalfiel­d Place, along with connecting Newbigging Drive, and remained at the scene in the following days.

Detective Inspector Allan Thomson said: “Our thoughts are with the family of Mr Melvin at this difficult time.

“There will continue to be a visible police presence in the area as we carry out our inquiries and I would like to thank the community in Arbroath for their patience and support.

“We are urging anyone with informatio­n to contact Police Scotland through 101. Please do no post any comments on social media which could prejudice any future criminal proceeding­s.”
