Celtic’s Dubai trip defended by midfielder

Aaron Comrie is convinced he can make it back to the Premiership with Dunfermline after penning a two-year contract extension.

The full-back was in the final six months of his previous agreement and had been attracting interest from a number of other clubs, including Dundee.

But, despite the possibility of a move to the top flight this summer, the former St Johnstone defender insists he was thrilled to commit his long- term future to the Pars.

The 23-year-old, who began his career as a youth at Celtic, has struggled with an ankle problem this season but last term missed just one match for the Fifers and is convinced the club is on the road to success.

He said: “I’m delighted, over the moon. I’ve loved my time here so far and to get a bit of security in these current times is brilliant for me. I’m looking forward to the next two years.

“I’ve always made it clear that I’d like to extend my stay at Dunfermline.

“The manager spoke about me in a positive way and spoke about the club in a positive way, so it was a no-brainer.

“I think everybody at the club wants promotion, that’s the aim.

“Dunfermline’s been in the Championship for a long time but if we can stay together as a group and hold on to good players, and keep progressing the club, I think we’ve got a good chance.”

Dunfermline sit second in the table, five points adrift of favourites Hearts, who they face at Tynecastle next Tuesday.

But the Fifers were the first to defeat the Jambos, with Dundee’s win over the Gorgie side on Saturday further proving their fallibility.

And, ahead of Saturday’s Scottish Cup clash with Morton in Greenock, Comrie admits Stevie Crawford’s side face a key spell in their campaign.

He added: “It’s a tough week coming up. Cappielow is a very tough place to go, especially this early in the cup.

“It would have been nice getting a home draw but so be it. We’ve been at Morton plenty of times, we know the challenges it’s going to bring.

“Especially having them twice in a week, with Heart sin the middle, it’s going to be a tough old week.

“But it’s one the boys are looking forward to. There’s nothing better than playing games and, with what’s going on at the minute, in terms of lockdown, hopefully it will be a good week for the fans watching.

“Hopefully we can put a smile on their faces with a couple of wins and a cup run.”
