BASKETBALL: Kinross teenager Ella Doherty has landed a dream move to the US after being snapped up by the University of Toledo. The 17-year-old from Kinross will depart the WBBL’S Caledonia Pride and decamp for a scholarshi­p in Ohio later this year for a crack at the American college basketball dream. Great Britain Under-16 cap Doherty came through the junior ranks at Perth Phoenix.

FORMULA ONE:

The Chinese Grand Prix is set to be postponed with bosses working on a revamped calendar for the new season. The race in Shanghai is pencilled in for April 11, but China’s strict Covid-19 travel restrictio­ns will make staging a race there in the coming months virtually impossible. The season-opening Australian GP in March is almost certain to be postponed.

TENNIS: Britain’s Francesca Jones,

20, secured her first victory in grand slam qualifying over former top-30 player Monica Niculescu in the first round of the Australian Open in Dubai. British No 3 Harriet Dart, who reached the second round of the main draw last year, was beaten 7-5 6-2 by American Grace Min.

CRICKET: India salvaged an unlikely draw as the third Test against Australia reached a thrilling finale. The tourists – who resumed on 98-2 and were chasing an unlikely 407 to win – battled superbly to finish on 334-5. The series remains level at 1-1 heading into the fourth and final Test in Brisbane, which gets under way on Friday.

BOXING:

Profession­al boxing in Britain has given the green light for a resumption of events in mid-february. The BBBC had announced no fights were to take place this month due to the rise in coronaviru­s cases in the UK.
