Covid regulations will restrict mourners at Sydney Devine funeral

-

Scots singing legend Sydney Devine will be laid to rest on Thursday.

The country star, who sold 15 million albums during a career spanning almost 70 years, passed away aged 81 earlier this month.

His funeral service will be held at noon in Alloway Parish Church in Ayrshire followed by a burial at Ayr Cemetery.

Fans of the crooner have been told only 20 people are permitted entry into the church due to coronavirus restrictions.

Those wishing to attend to pay their respects have also been reminded to respect social-distancing rules.

A message on the Sydney Devine Country fan page, posted with the consent of his family, reads: “Please note that due to the Covid-19 rules there are still only 20 members allowed inside the church. Please do not make any attempts to try and enter the church, as all 20 people have now been counted and submitted to the police.

“Please also note that you must observe socialdistancing at all times.

“We know for a fact that if the circumstances were normal then there would have been a packed church, streets lined with fans and people wanting to pay their respects to Sydney and his family, however we are not in normal circumstances.

“This is a very difficult time for the family – not only is it the funeral of one of Scotland’s very much-loved celebrities and entertainers, to the family it is about Sydney being a husband for almost 60 years, a dad, a papa, a brother, an uncle and a colleague and friend.”
